Our Ethos
1. Care for the patient and family
2. Care for each other
3. Support partner organisations
The patient and family are at the centre of our model for holistic, accessible, and affordable palliative care provided in ways that respect the culture in which care is provided.
Hospice Africa Uganda nurtures its students with compassion, mentorship, and professional guidance, equipping them to provide dignified and ethical palliative care in their communities.
Our Mission
To bring peace to the suffering in Africa through providing and facilitating affordable and accessible palliative care in Uganda and other African countries
Our Vision
That palliative care is available to all in need in Africa.
What We Do
Hospice Africa Uganda provides palliative care to critically ill patients and those with life-limiting illnesses across three sites in Uganda. With a vision that palliative care is available to all in need in Africa, we also provide training and education to healthcare providers across the African continent through the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care. To support our work in managing the pain of patients we manufacture oral liquid morphine at our headquarters in Kampala, under licence from the Ministry of Health, providing all the oral liquid morphine needs for Uganda.

Holistic Palliative Care
Our clinical teams provide patients with holistic palliative care from within the clinic, at home, and at ourtreach sites. This includes support for patients and their families with spiritual, economic and bereavement counselling.

Morphine Production
Hospice Africa Uganda produces affordable morphine on site in Kampala which is then prescribed to our patients and sent out to other medical facilities across the country.

Education & Research
A core part of our mission is to enable palliative care across Africa. We do this by providing training for students and healthcare professionals.

International Programmes
Although our clinical centre is in Uganda, we work with partner organisations in many African countries to help them initiate and sustain palliative care programs.

Donate what you can and help patients like Alice.
Alice is a mother of five who lives on the edge of one of Kampala’s largest slums. She has advanced breast cancer, with no hope of a cure. After spending all the household savings on medical tests, Alice and her family faced an uncertain and painful future. But thanks to the dedicated care of the HAU team — and the generosity of supporters like you — Alice is now at home pain-free and comfortable, surrounded by her loved ones. With additional help from the HAU Comfort Fund, her husband has been able to start a small business, giving the family hope for the future. Please donate to help us support patients like Alice, and their families
The Beginning
Hospice Africa Uganda was founded in September 1993 by Dr. Anne Merriman, a visionary who recognised the urgent need for palliative care in Uganda and wider Africa.
She established the first clinic in Makindye, Kampala, creating a model that has since guided the expansion of palliative care throughout the continent. Today, additional clinics in Mbarara and Hoima continue this vital mission.
