About Hospice Africa Uganda – Kampala Site
Founded in 1993, Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) began its journey at the Makindye site in Kampala, which continues to serve as the organization’s headquarters. For over three decades, HAU has been at the forefront of providing holistic palliative care, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients living with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other serious conditions.
At its Kampala site, HAU offers a wide range of services designed to ensure that holistic, person-centered palliative care is accessible to patients in Kampala and surrounding districts. Our services include:
- Home visits for critically ill, elderly, or financially constrained patients unable to travel
- Outpatient consultations at the Makindye site, providing medical, emotional, and psychosocial support
- Daycare programs offering comfort, social interaction, relief for patients and respite to the caretakers and their families
- Outreach clinics reaching underserved communities, including informal urban settlements (Slums) like Katanga, Kasokoso and Namuwongo-Kisugu, as well as surrounding areas such as Mukono
- Hospital-based palliative care in partnership with Mulago National Referral Hospital and the Uganda Cancer Institute
Additionally, Kampala site is home to two of HAU’s key pillars:
The Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA): A leading training and education center in palliative care for healthcare professionals from across the African continent. Students at the Institute receive hands-on practical training alongside the clinical team in Kampala.
HAU also hosts the Hospice Africa Uganda Research and Ethics Committee (HAUREC), which upholds the highest ethical standards in palliative care research conducted through the organization. Through its comprehensive approach, Hospice Africa Uganda in Kampala remains a model of hope, dignity, compassion and holistic palliative care for patients and families facing life limiting illnesses.
- The Morphine Production Unit: Producing affordable oral liquid morphine to effectively manage pain for patients with illnesses, ensuring this essential medicine remains accessible.
