Palliative Care for Africa
What We Do
Hospice Africa provides palliative care to patients and palliative care training for providers across Africa. To do this, we have created a model with our clinical headquarters in Kampala, Uganda, where we manufacture morphine, treat patients, and run our education programmes. Students from all parts of Africa enrol in our palliative care study programmes in order to carry on the work we do at Hospice in their respective countries. The idea is that this model can be replicated and provide much needed palliative care across all of Africa.
Holistic Clinical Care
Our clinical teams provide patients with holistic palliative care from within the clinic, at home, and at ourtreach sites. This includes support for patients and their families with spiritual, economic and bereavement counselling.
International Programs
Although our clinical centre is in Uganda, we work with partner organisations in many African countries to help them initiate and sustain palliative care programs.
Education
A core part of our mission is to enable palliative care across Africa. We do this by providing training for students and healthcare professionals.
Research
In order to maintain our active role in the global palliative care community, we support, conduct, and publish research on the benefits and practices of palliative care.

Where we started
Hospice Africa grew from the desire of its founding members to provide a palliative care model that could alleviate the pain and suffering experienced by those living with life limiting illness across Africa. This holistic model consists of four core pillars of palliative care that can be delivered in an affordable, culturally acceptable, and adaptable way.
The Hospice Africa Network
Hospice Africa was founded in Liverpool, UK in 1992; since then, we’ve expanded our clinical and support operations globally. Our clinical headquarters is based in Uganda, where our teams have developed an affordable and culturally appropriate palliative care model which is being replicated by other organisations all across Africa. We have also established a global support network which, as well as the UK, includes separate legal entities in Ireland, France, Australia and the USA. The teams in these countries work hard to support the vision “Palliative Care for all in need in Africa” with advocacy and fundraising support.
