About the Anne Merriman Foundation (AMF)
Empowering Compassion: Supporting Hospice Africa Uganda
The Anne Merriman Foundation (‘The Foundation’) was established in 2015 and is named in Dr Anne Merriman’s honour.
‘Palliative Care for all in Africa’ is the Founding Vision as set out in the Foundation’s Charter, based on the principles of Ubuntu (Humanity to others), which enshrines compassion, dignity of the person and caring in togetherness. The visionary leadership of ‘Dr Anne’ (as she was colloquially known) has inspired many across global frontiers.
The Foundation aims to preserve the “Merriman Model” for African palliative care, delivered at the place most suitable for the patient and family, in a way that is economically sound, culturally appropriate and sustainable.
The Foundation champions and supports all of the palliative care services and educational facilities of Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) together with advocacy and training throughout Francophone and Anglophone African countries.
The Ethos and Aims of the Foundation require that support for the most vulnerable embodies holistic care, that enshrines three major elements, the summary of which are:
- The patient and family must be at the centre of all we do,
- Caring for each other.
- We cannot work alone.
The Governing Committee is comprised of representatives from each country party to the Foundation’s Charter.
Our Mission: To support Hospice Africa Uganda in delivering palliative and end-of-life care in accordance with our ethos.
Our Purpose and Vision: To preserve the Founding Vision.
The Foundation advocates that every person facing life-limiting illness be provided with access to compassionate and holistic care, affirming that palliative care is a fundamental human right.

Supporting Hospice Africa Uganda
Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) is internationally recognised for pioneering palliative care in Africa. Since its inception in 1993, HAU has brought comfort, hope, and dignity to those suffering from life-threatening illness across the Continent. Yet, the challenges remain immense—ranging from limited resources to evolving health needs and systemic barriers.
Through targeted initiatives, strategic partnerships, and continual learning, The Foundation supports Hospice Africa Uganda by providing:
- Governance: We are engaged with HAU's leadership, by way of Board sub-committee membership, thus impacting direction, accountability, transparency, effective policy frameworks and sustainability.
- Advocacy: Raising awareness of palliative care and championing best practices to shape public policy and inspire community involvement across the Continent.
- Resource Mobilization: Securing funding and in-kind support to sustain and expand HAU's services
