One year on: Honouring Dr Anne’s Legacy

The critical role of palliative care education and training in Africa

On May 18th, 2026, we mark the first anniversary of the death of Dr Anne Merriman - a pioneer who founded Hospice Africa Uganda in 1993, and who transformed access to palliative care across Africa.

Dr Anne’s vision was simple but powerful: that no one should live or die in unnecessary pain. And that palliative care would be available to all in need.

A cornerstone of that vision was training and education.

Dr Anne understood that compassionate care depends on health professionals having the skills and values needed to deliver palliative care in even the most resource-limited settings.

That is why she established the Institute for Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA), which is based at the Hospice Africa Uganda headquarters in Kampala.

Why this discussion matters now

Across Africa, millions still lack access to adequate pain relief and compassionate end-of-life care.

While progress has been made, the need for skilled, trained professionals has never been greater.

Investing in education and training is how we can:

  • Expand access to palliative care in Uganda and throughout the continent
  • Strengthen health systems
  • Ensure dignity for patients with life limiting illness and their families
  • Increase evidence-base through research to inform policy and practice
