About Us

Hospice Africa France (HAF) was established in 2009 in a small village in Brittany with the objective of raising funds to support Hospice Africa Uganda’s International Programmes (IP) department, and in particular its outreach to Francophone countries in Africa.

This support includes funding the running costs of IP’s Francophone Course as well as funding any shortfall on the costs of Francophone training, mentoring IP alumni and for participants to attend training in Uganda.

This remains our main focus. However, we also work with other French organisations to raise awareness in France of Africa’s need for palliative care. In addition to this, we finance visits to France by IP personnel for that purpose. In addition, we fund some of the HAU Community Volunteer Programme.

Our links with these different groups have made it possible to provide French-speaking professionals to support IP’s francophone training both in Africa and online. HAF has also provided funding to young French-speaking volunteers to work with the IP team in Uganda.

In future, it is hoped that we can provide funding to palliative care services established by former beneficiaries of IP training, to help them develop those services in their own countries, hence further sharing the Merriman Method for francophone Africa.

Whilst HAF was established by English-speaking residents of the Jugon-les-Lacs village, our board and volunteers are now mainly from the local community. Most of the funding comes from a charity shop in the village which has become a point of exchange. As well as a wide range of funding activities, our initiative receives financial support from local and regional government.

Our work with International Programmes

We work closely with the International Programmess Department in Uganda. On the one hand, we fund the French-speaking program for initial palliative care trainings that are held in Uganda. We also provide French-speaking human resources for this training. In France, we work to raise awareness of the need for affordable palliative care in Africa. We develop links with organizations with similar goals and make presentations at conferences, in schools, etc. We organize and fund presentations by Ugandan teams in France.
